photo_089.jpgName  Amy Lane

Background Info (Family, Career etc)  I am a 31 year old married Mum with two girls aged 5 and 23 months. I originally trained and qualified as a Primary School Teacher with a specialism in music and taught for 5 years before starting a family. After having my children, I was reluctant to return to teaching after my extended maternity leave as I wanted to be at home to look after the girls. Eventually I took the plunge and started my own business.

Business Name & Overview
Cake Shop Corner specialises in making beautiful cakes and cupcakes for all occasions. I use good quality ingredients to make delicious cakes, which are decorated in any style you desire. I make cakes for birthdays, weddings, christenings, thank you gifts, valentines day, in fact, any occasion you can think of!

shoe_birthday_cake.jpgHow long have you been in business?
I started the business 5 months ago.

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?
I have been making and decorating cakes for family occasions for several years. Many friends and relatives commented that I should start doing it professionally. After I took a course at the local college in Cake Artistry, I began to realise I  could turn my hobby into my career. I wanted a flexible job I could fit around my family commitments and still earn me a decent monthly income, and this seemed like the perfect solution.

Best thing about running your own business?
I'm the boss so I can work flexible hours and fit my job around my home life. I am also doing a job that I love!

Biggest hurdle/obstacle so far?
One of the biggest hurdles has been getting my name out there on a limited budget. Cakes are difficult to post so most of my attention has been focused on launching myself locally. If I can successfully crack sending cakes in the mail then I can open myself up to a wider audience.

christening_cake.jpgWhere do you want to be in 5 years?
I would like to be a known and respected name in my field and have a solid business behind me. I would also like to be earning the same salary as I was when I was teaching. My ultimate dream is to have my own little cafe/bakery shop.

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?
Plan well for success and don't give up. You will probably find you have an initial rush and then a very quiet period. This doesn't mean your business has failed, you just need to keep plugging at it. Always carry business cards with you and tell everyone you meet about your business - you'll be surprised how you can drop it into a conversation without it seeming forced!

How did you find out about Stallfinder?
I can't remember how I first found out about Stallfinder, it just always seems to have been there! I follow Stallfinder on Twitter so it could have been there or one of the many craft forums I frequent!

Any other comments
Gail has been so very supportive from the first moment I took the plunge and started my business. Since taking a listing on Stallfinder I have had numerous calls and emails inviting me to take stalls at local events. It is been one of the best decisions I have taken and great value for money.

Background Info (Family, Career etc)  I'm wife to Roy, 32 and Mum to Kieran, 3years. Before running my own business I worked in the health & social care sector, most recently a very rewarding position in adult services for the National Autistic Society.

Business Name & Overview  Precious Parcels - North Yorkshire. Also Mumsworld Events. Precious Parcels is an ever expanding business making gorgeous handcrafted plaques, gifts and home items. I recently got together with Natalie Hickey, the brains and talent behind PP and together we have launched Precious Parcels - North Yorkshire where I will be promoting and making available PP items across North Yorkshire at events, sales, exhibitions and more.

gingham.jpgHow long have you been in business?
I left the rat-race when Kieran was born so just over three years and can honestly say I've never looked back!

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?
I started my own business for the same reason many women do - to be able to work from home & bring an income into the home without the need for costly childcare. Oh, and to keep the grey cells from giving up after childbirth!

Best thing about running your own business?
Its a toss up between the flexibility & being my own boss!

pinkbutterflyclock.jpgBiggest hurdle/obstacle so far?
That's a difficult one! It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, with plenty of ups and downs but there is nothing I've not been able to get through with the support of my family, and most of all my husband, Roy.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?
Barbados, Italy.....Seriously - I'd like to be where I am now in that I'll be running my own ventures and developing the business onwards and upwards, but earning a lot more - a LOT more. There's really no upper limit money-wise lol!

woodenhearts.jpgAny hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?
Be realistic, set short term and longer term goals and remember that it's not a failure if you have to reset your timescales. Also - set time aside for you! It's very easy to work 24/7 (I've done it and am still guilty of it when I have a bigger project on etc) but learn to schedule an hour here or there for a DVD, a walk, a cuddle with your long-suffering partner (mine suffers a lot he tells me).

How did you find out about Stallfinder?
Amongst anyone who sells at events or arranges events, Stallfinder is just "known" - I can't remember one single place I first came across or heard about Stallfinder - it kind of came with the package of running my own business!

Any other comments?
I have to say that I am a staunch supporter of Stallfinder, and Gail! Stallfinder as a business has been so unbelievably useful to me and my business and Gail has been a great support!

Name  pookey_logo.jpgLisa Hicks

pookey_jewellery.jpgBackground Info  I am a mum to a two year old son called Bruce. I am married and currently self employed and a brilliant housewife, but have spent most of my life working clerical jobs whilst I travelled globally and enjoyed the finer points of the University of Life.

Business Name & Overview  I own an online boutique called "The Pookey Boutique". We started as a children's wear shop specialising in bringing the more unique items of clothing that we sourced from all over the world. allowing the child to be seen in something this season and very chic. We then acted on requests that we do the same for all those yummy mummies and produced a range of stunning ladies wear and accessories labels. We have also just bowed to extra pressure to supply items for mummies little darlings with four legs and we are currently designing a range of brands for daddy too.

pookey_pooch.jpgHow long have you been in business?  We are just coming up to our third year.

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?  I moved from London to Lichfield when I fell pregnant with my son. I was desperate to give him a greener upbringing. When I had Bruce I found that returning to work was going to be a lot harder then it seemed as most positions I applied for didn't seem too keen on new mothers. I had a long think about all the ideas and dreams I had had when travelling and decided to brainstorm. I came up with the idea of starting my own on-line shop that sold all the fab and cute labels I had discovered whilst globetrotting. I built my own shop and even made my own brand of clothing to add to the ranges. Two years on and I am adding selective labels to already established designers.

pookey_nappy_cake.jpgBest thing about running your own business?  The best thing about running my own business is the time it allows me with my son and the overwhelming feeling of satisfaction it gives me. I log on every morning to my shop and think  "I made that".

Biggest hurdle/obstacle so far?  Without a doubt....this recession. It's hitting small businesses harder now and keeping your head above water means that you have to do some things that don't work with your style or brand name.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?  I want to have an actual shop. A small boutique single room with lashings of style and customers.

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  Be patient. Rome, as they say, wasn't built in a day and despite what some may say...DROPSHIPPING isn't a dirty word, it saves money and space for mums at home who want that extra bit of pocket money. Get your name out there as much as you can and local fetes and stall markets are the perfect way to do that.

duckie_000.jpgName  Julie Hayward

Background Info  Married to Lee and instead of kids we have so far opted for 1 Border Collie and 4 cats.

Business Name & Overview  Balloon Baboon. We offer balloon flowers, animals, characters and other truly unique balloon deliveries nationwide

How long have you been in business?   Since February 2009

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?  When the balloon monkey I put on the outside of my husband’s Valentine box got a bigger reaction than the helium inside it got me thinking. Since then Lee and I have begun creating all sorts of balloon designs.

cheekymonkey_000.jpgBest thing about running your own business?  That is tricky, it would either be when a new design works and we can add it to the site OR the emails we get from customers once they receive their delivery.

Biggest hurdle/obstacle so far?  Letting people know that we exist really. Things are gathering momentum but it always takes time.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?  We want to be recognized as one of the leading online balloon delivery sites and certainly the most unique. Our balloons not only make fantastic gifts but also very effective marketing tools so we certainly want to become an established name in that field too. It would also be great to be working with florists, party and event planners and retailers who can see our product working well within their current range as it is always great to share ideas and reach new customers through joint ventures.

stork_001.jpgAny hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  If you have an idea just do it but start small and build on your success BUT never think that you can’t compete with ‘the big boys.’ If you have an idea that you feel passionate about, get going and don’t feel embarrassed about letting people know what you are doing. Look for joint ventures and be open to ideas and opportunities that can come along when you least expect it.

How long have you been in business?  We have been in business since September 2008.

baby_shower_book.jpgWhy did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?  My daughter had some Reindeer food as a gift - I loved the idea of it - but also knew I could do something a bit better. So I started to make a new born baby gift for my God daughter Ruby. After that things took off.

My mum is good at making poems, so I knew I was on to a good thing there. It took me a long time to decide what gifts to make and how to go about deciding what keepsakes would go in the organza bags.

Best thing about running your own business?  The crazy thing is I still work three days a week as well as looking after the family and my little business. I hope by the time Lily goes to school to be able to work full time with Lily-Rose Designs. However, saying that it is a full time job now!!!

Biggest hurdle/obstacle so far?  I think for me it was getting people to take me & my business seriously. It's not the normal thing I would be doing 'Starting up a business', but it's going well. I think I have surprised myself & a lot of people out there.

baby_ann.jpgWhere do you want to be in 5 years?  Happy & Healthy. I started my business not because of wanting to make money. I love being creative. So for me this really is what I want to do full time. I would also like to be working on some more new gifts, I hope to extend my range to personalised children's aprons, Quilts etc...I did a 2 year fashion course in my younger days so it will be nice to put that talent to use.

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  Stick with it - You will be in for some very late nights. But try get a good balance right between; family, work, shopping, eating, feeding the cat, ironing and looking after a 2 year old !!!

How did you find out about Stallfinder?  I found Stallfinder on google and then also on Mums Club

daisy_daisy_1.jpgName  Jayne Bradshaw

Background Info  I am a working mum, married with 2 children and 2 basset hounds.

Business Name & Overview  I knew I wanted to start a business, but it needed to be something I loved if it was going to take up all of my spare time. I love spending time in the garden, whether it be weeding, planting, mowing or just pottering around trying to find the perfect place for a new plant.

My 1st garden was a traditional cottage garden which was wild and overgrown at the beginning, but after a lot of hard work became full of Primroses, Bluebells, Snowdrops, Honeysuckle, Foxgloves not forgetting one of my favourites ‘Granny Bonnets’ and numerous plants with names I don’t remember, but helped create my perfect Cottage Garden.

I love adding things to the garden, whether it be a hanging lantern, a bird house or some scattered wild flower seeds that grow a few months later (long after you’ve forgotten you planted them and hopefully after surviving my 2 Basset Hounds who like to dig!) so it made sense to start a business selling garden and outdoor living products, after lots (& lots!) of discussions with friends and family Swings and Pretty Things was formed.

compost_bin.jpgHow long have you been in business?  Started June 2008

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?  I started my own business as I wanted to do something for me, an acheivement of my very own. The idea started as a childrens shoe shop!, but realised that was never going to work without an actual shop so I decided to write a list of all the things I liked to do and gardening was in my top 3 (eating chocolate & drinking wine were close to the top too!). I then did some research looking at what other people sold, other website designs etc, made severel lists, re wrote them and then decided to take the plunge... the rest as they say is history.

Best thing about running your own business?  I get such a buzz when I find new & unusual products to sell.

propogation_kit1_medium.jpgBiggest hurdle/obstacle so far?  Sorting out my website and working on SEO!.. it's a minefield.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?  In 5 years I'd like to see my company grow whereby it becomes a well known on-line retailer for unusual garden and outdoor living products.

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  Make a list of EVERYTHING! and never throw that list out.

Research, research and more research - everything from companies that will be competitors, to set up costs, to practicalilties of running a business.

Look at the pro's and con's and don't let excitment get in the way of the important stuff.

How did you find out about Stallfinder?  I found it by accident whilst looking for events to attend.

westie_hand_bag.jpgName  June Bradbury

Background Info  I started my working life as a nurse, first in a large hospital and then in the community, mainly in and around Camberwell in South East London. I found out I was pregnant on the second day of a new job in 1985 (that was embarrassing) and I didn’t seem to stop producing children until I had four of them. For ten months they were all under five years of age! (Including twins) I rarely left the house, and I never got a hot cup of tea because something would always happen which would stop me sitting down to drink it.

I am quite creative but sewing is my greatest skill. I made dressing up clothes for all my children, the children of family, neighbours and friends and also for the school productions. Later I did some costume work for TV and film. When my children were in secondary school I went back to work full-time in the community and worked until I was made redundant in 2006. After that it was difficult to get a job because of my age so I decided to do a degree in humanities at Brighton University. I am in my second year now, absolutely loving it, and wish degrees lasted for ten years, not just three. I am on a grant like everyone else, but my fellow students are young and energetic and can work in clubs or shops during the summer and I just can’t. So I had to come up with another idea for making some money when the grant runs out.

badger.jpgBusiness Name & Overview  In The Bag Designs. I got the idea of hand-painting jute bags when I made one for my sister as a gift. I got so fed up because I couldn’t find a jute bag without a Supermarket logo on it. I found one which had just a bit of writing in the corner and painted a cockatiel on it.  She liked it so much that I made some more stencils and gave bags to my friends and family, and everyone loved them. They are simple designs depicting wild animals, birds and dogs mainly.  I borrowed the money from my eldest daughter and placed my first bulk order for plain jute bags. The bags I buy are not the cheapest on the market but have the best ethical rating. I don’t make as big a profit, but I feel good about this decision.

How long have you been in business?  I started designing, cutting and painting the bags in May 2008 and had my first stall at Middle Farm near Lewes in June and it was brilliant. I was completely overwhelmed by the responses I got from the general public. It boosted my confidence no end. My daughter came with me and I could see how proud she was of her old mum. It’s such a blessing to have my family behind me. I am very lucky.

Why did you start your own business/what gave you the idea?  I have had lots of ideas for businesses throughout my life. I have written more business plans that I care to remember. This one has been the most successful and had the least amount of planning. In fact I didn’t plan it at all. It just happened. Weird that!

Best thing about running your own business?  Commitment comes easily running ones own business and I don’t have to beg employers to let me work in theirs or suffer the humiliation of ‘signing on’.

Biggest hurdle/obstacle so far?  Finding the time to create new stencils and setting up a website (which I haven’t achieved yet)

Where do you want to be in 5 years?  Still studying, maybe writing that book I have always wanted to write.....

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  Write everything down, even if you think it isn’t important. It may well turn out to be the one piece of information you need.  When you are faced with making a decision, you will have the information to help you make the right one.

How did you find out about Stallfinder?  Amanda, my fairy princess told me about it (Maygreen Fairies). We met at Uckfield craft market. She’s lovely.

Your Background Info  Married with one daughter in secondary school. Working part time for Local Authority in a leisure complex as an admin assistant.

Your Business Name & Overview  Education Takeaway provides learning resources to parents of primary school children. I’m also a Phoenix Trader.

How long have you been in business?
Since about 6 years ago when my daughter was just in primary school. Now she has moved onto secondary I can devote more of my time to the business.

jolly_phonics_cd_&_book.jpgWhy did you start your own business?  It runs in the family, both my parents and grandparents had been in business. So it was something I had wanted to do for years but didn’t know what or when.

When my daughter was in primary school she brought home a Story Sack. The very first Sack had a great game in that we all loved to play as a family. So at the end of the week when the Sack had to go back to school we looked for the game on the high street. We struggled to find it, so I contacted the company that manufactured it, to see where their local retailer was. They sent a catalogue and within days I had friends asking if they could also buy the range. I did some research and soon found that lots of other parents were also interested in helping their children to learn outside the classroom. My range has grown over the years to include the very popular Jolly Phonics as well as Oxford Reading Tree, Bedlam Cubes and more.

Best thing about running your own business?
Meeting new people, I go to a few networking groups in my area and also help to run one.  Learning how they run their businesses and looking back on what I have achieved.

Biggest hurdle or obstacle so far?
Having the website developed. It gave me hours of sleepless nights. Then once it was launched, getting it found by customers in the search engines was an even bigger hurdle.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?
Working on Education Takeaway full time from home. Also become Executive Trader with Phoenix Trading.

Any hints or tips for anyone starting out or running their own small business?  Networking. I have learned so much and made so many new friends through networking groups. Joining forums online has also helped. I could be struggling to do some small thing, pop a post in a forum and within minutes I get an answer.

How did you find out about Stallfinder?  I use lots of online forums so can’t really remember the first time I came across Stallfinder but I think it could have been Giant Potential.

Name  Caroline Parker

Location Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Your Background Info  Mum of two girls aged 4 and 2, spent most of my working life in retail. Left to raise the girls, and then set my own business up.

Your Business Name & Overview The Dales Party Company Ltd. This incorporates Cari's Gift Shop, which I set up in 2006, and more recently Party Sprite which is my main business, selling party supplies and decorations. We are also working on a new side of the company, Coochie Cou, which will hold Baby Fairs, Christmas Shopping Nights and other selling events throughout North Yorkshire and Teesside. In my spare time I sell Usborne Books.

How long have you been in business?
I started the gift shop in 2006 and then took some time out, setting up Party Sprite and reviving the gift shop at the beginning of 2008. I have been selling Usborne Books since September 2006.

Why did you start your own business?
I started the gift shop as I wanted to do something from home, and I had a strong background in retail. I love candles and scented products so it seemed like a good idea to sell those. More recently the party supplies came to me as a friend was closing her business and I got the suppliers details from her.

Best thing about running your own business?
I can be with the children when I need to be, all I have to do is juggle things a little. My time is truly my own.

Biggest hurdle or obstacle so far?
I would say the biggest hurdle has to be keeping the cash flowing. We are a low income family so starting the business on virtually nothing was interesting and keeping the stock turnng round quickly so the money doesn't dry up is a huge challenge.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?
I have plans to open a wholesale side and would love to have my own office/warehouse space to free up some space in our home!

How did you find out about Stallfinder?
I think it was word of mouth. I go on a lot of forums that Gail from Stallfinder uses too and have definitely seen the site mentioned more than a few times. I liked the idea as it has been really tricky in the past to find out what is going on in my area.

How has Stallfinder worked for you?
I use the site a lot to check for events in my area and have had a few enquiries from event organisers too. In the future I will be using it to advertise our Baby Fairs and Christmas events and look for stallholders for them.
